Teacher Lesson Ideas
Civil War
There are many topics to cover when teaching the Civil War. From before the actual dissolution of the Union to Sherman's march to the sea, South Carolina was a major player in the events of this struggle. However, learning about the Civil War can mean more than dates and remembering who won the battles. To introduce new aspects of the war in your classroom consider using period songs and photographs to interest your students. Think about inviting a group of re-enactors to your school or going to visit them at a Civil War site. Working with primary documents can also excite students. Read the Ordinance of Secession or the Emancipation Proclamation as a class to get a better understanding of what these measures attempted to accomplish.
